New App State Password Change Process and Account Access

App State’s new password and account access management platform, iam.appstate.edu, will replace password.appstate.edu on Monday, June 23.

  • This update is the second phase of Information Technology Services' three-phase Identity and Access Management (IAM) project. The third and final phase of this project will focus on external system integrations, as well as user access requests and supervisor approval processes.

  • IAM is a process that manages user access to resources such as devices, applications, data and the university’s network. The goal of the IAM project is to make it easier and faster to grant access to IT services and further automate account management.

Preparing for your next password change

ITS encourages faculty, staff and students to take these actions before their next password change:

  1. Log in to iam.appstate.edu

  2. Accept the Acceptable Use of Computing and Electronic Resources Policy

  3. Accept the Appalachian State Statement of Confidentiality

  4. Establish security questions

After June 23, all users will be directed to iam.appstate.edu to complete these steps during their next password change.

Security questions

In the new system, four predefined (platform-provided) and two user-defined (individually created) security questions are required.

Any previously set questions will not transfer to the new platform and will have to be reestablished the next time a user is prompted to make a password change.

Passwords for generic accounts

Generic or nonpersonal email accounts, such as support@appstate.edu, are tied to individuals at the university.
