Following the University of North Carolina System’s selection of Canvas by Instructure as the standard LMS for all institutions in July 2025, Academic and Emerging Technologies is leading the university’s transition. Keep reading for a project update, including a timeline, high-level roadmap and initial steps for the move from AsULearn (Moodle) to Canvas.
Timeline at a glance
As App State transitions, our priority is to provide an 18-month phased approach that allows faculty to move at a pace that works for their curriculum.
Summer 2026: The first semester faculty can opt in to use Canvas (details to come).
Spring 2027: The final semester faculty may choose between using AsULearn (Moodle) or Canvas.
Summer 2027: All courses must be taught in Canvas. Moodle support reaches end of life.
Course sandboxes
To help you get a feel for the new environment, Academic and Emerging Technologies will provide Development (Dev) courses for exploration. These spaces will allow faculty to explore features, follow along in future workshop sessions and experiment with course layouts. Additional details will be shared soon.
What happens to my AsULearn content?
We know course materials and designs are the result of years of hard work. As we approach the Summer 2027 transition deadline, we will provide specific workflows and support for migrating or storing your content.
Moving forward
We are committed to transparency and will continue to provide updates as we finalize contract details, training schedules, resources and migration tools. Visit the ITS Canvas webpages for ongoing updates.
Thank you for your patience and dedication to providing a world-class digital learning environment for our students.
