Preparation is underway for the university-wide transition to Canvas, App State’s new learning management system (LMS).
We have created development courses (sandboxes for exploration), implemented third-party integrations and will continue to develop workshops to help you navigate the platform's unique features.
Key dates and actions
Opt-in: Summer opt-in has closed; fall opt-in is open until April 23. The opt-in process is handled per course, per semester. If you opted into Canvas for the summer, you need to complete the opt-in process again for fall 2026.
Development courses: Canvas Dev courses are now available for all faculty who taught in spring 2025. To request a space to build and test content, submit a Canvas Support Request.
Accessibility first: To ensure a smoother migration and align with digital accessibility standards, use the Brickfield Accessibility+ Toolkit to fix AsULearn (Moodle) content before migration.
Bulk migration: Starting in late April, we will begin moving two years of AsULearn course content into Canvas.
Student awareness: We communicated with students this week to explain the change and provide resources. Please clearly communicate to your students via email or your syllabus which platform (Canvas or AsULearn) you will be using for your specific courses each semester, while we are in transition.
Final transition timeline
The university will fully migrate to Canvas by summer 2027, with spring 2027 serving as the final term for any remaining AsULearn (Moodle) course activity. We encourage faculty to utilize the upcoming semesters to migrate and test their materials ahead of this deadline.
Platform comparison
No two learning management systems are identical. While Canvas offers a modern and user-friendly interface, many common Moodle activities require manual adjustment or rebuilding to function correctly after migration.
For more details, please review our at-a-glance platform comparison and the exhaustive review in our Knowledge Base. Many external tools have been installed and are now available in our Canvas development instances.
