The UNC System approved a resolution to standardize the use of a single, unified Learning Management System (LMS) across all institutions. The selected platform is Canvas by Instructure. 

App State has begun this transition, and the Academic and Emerging Technologies (AET) Division of Information Technology Services is leading the migration and support. View the full timeline.

General

  • How can I access the App State Canvas environment?

  • How do I switch between Canvas and AsULearn?

    • Use the built‑in navigation links. Each platform will display a menu link to the other platform, so you can toggle between them without having to search or log in separately. AsULearn has a Canvas link in the site navigation along the top of the platform. Canvas has an AsULearn link in the global navigation links at the left of the platform. 
  • Where do I go for help?

Faculty

  • What is the timeline for the migration?

    • The first opt-in opportunity for faculty to teach in Canvas will be Summer 2026 sessions. There will be opt-ins for summer, 2026, fall 2026, and spring 2027. All courses will be taught in Canvas for Summer 2027. View the full timeline.
  • What migrates over from AsULearn to Canvas, and what does not?
  • Will third-party tools still work in Canvas?
  • If I have worked to make my course accessible in AsULearn and the course is imported into Canvas, is it still accessible?

    • Any accessible course content in AsULearn will be accessible when moved to Canvas. 
  • How do instructors get support and “sandbox”/developmental courses?
  • Can I combine/metalink/crosslist sections in Canvas?

  • What about ASULearn Projects and Global?
    • We have extended the deadline for Projects and Global to coincide with the sunsetting of AsULearn. No courses will be active in AsULearn instances, including Projects and Global, after spring 2027.
  • If I opt in to Canvas, will I lose access to AsULearn courses?
  • The decision to opt-in to Canvas will not affect your access to AsULearn. Faculty will still have access to past courses, subject to our Course Access and Retention Policy

Students

  • When will students start using Canvas?

    • As early as Summer 2026 sessions.

  •  How do I switch between Canvas and AsULearn?

    • Use the built‑in navigation links. Each system will display a menu link to the other platform, so you can toggle between them without having to search or log in separately starting Summer I.

  • How can I stay organized with two systems?
    • Keeping track of deadlines and notifications across both platforms is essential.
    • Many students find it helpful to:
      • Use a single calendar to record due dates from both systems.
      • Set reminders for major assignments or exams.
      • Check notifications on each platform routinely if you have courses on both.
