Project: Upgrade to Confluence Cloud

Objective

Ensure a smooth and efficient transition as we upgrade our current instance of Atlassian’s Confluence to Confluence Cloud while preparing users and digital content for the platform.

Project Overview

App State is migrating to Confluence Cloud to take advantage of new features and benefit from improved performance, security and cloud-based collaboration.

  • Migration led by Information Technology Services (ITS).

  • Includes all active spaces (such as our Appalachian Technology Knowledge Base).

  • Completion is expected by Nov. 2025.

Why are we migrating to Confluence Cloud?

Benefits of migration from our current instance of Confluence Data Center to Confluence Cloud include

  • A modernized interface and enhanced user experience.

  • Enhanced security and simplified management.

  • Improved performance, analytics and mobile responsiveness.

  • More features and enhanced integration with other tools.

  • Enhanced collaboration capabilities.

What do I need to do to prepare a space for migration?

Retention

  • Follow the UNC Retention schedule when reviewing your content.

  • Review and update outdated content.

  • Replace or remove anything no longer needed (including unused and unpublished pages).


Archiving

If you have a space that must be maintained (that is no longer active), contact Eric Hartway.

Will all my content, including attachments, images and links, migrate to Confluence Cloud?

Images and attachments like PDFs, as well as embedded content like Google Drive files, will migrate. However, some macros may not transfer as expected and may need to be updated or replaced with their Cloud versions. Embedded links that point to Confluence Data Center pages should be reviewed and inventoried, as they may also break and require replacement.

 

Know Before Migration

  • Review internal links, some redirects may not carry over during migration.

  • Review critical pages that contain macros, as some macros may not migrate cleanly.

  • Expect slight layout differences on migrated pages.
